Chapter 38
The man remained unmoved. He watched me with stony indifference.
I tightened my grip on the cleaver-not in anger, but in resignation. I bowed to him one last time.
“Thank you for everything. I’m sorry if we’ve let you down.”
“You healed my face, and the price was purging this tower. But I can’t do it.”
“I can’t raise a hand against you, and I won’t raise a hand against my family. So, I’m returning your gift.”
I raised the cleaver and slashed at my own face with everything I had.
A gentle, unseen force caught my wrist inches from my skin, pushing me back until I stumbled into Julian’s
arms.
The paralysis spell broke instantly. Everyone in the room could move again.
Julian and the others steadied me.
“Congratulations, Alice,” the man said, his eyes crinkling with warmth. “You passed.”
The system voice chimed right on cue.

My mind reeled. I won? Just like that?
I didn’t have to kill the monsters?
And what about Julian and the others?
I threw my arms around my family, holding them tight, terrified they’d vanish if I let go.
“Hey! What about us?” The three rookies shouted, panic rising in their voices as the system ignored them.
The man shot a withering look in their direction. “Your hearts are rotten, and your motives are poison. I have no use for you.”
It was a summary judgment. He had condemned them.
The trio raged for a moment, but their fear turned into desperate aggression toward me. “Alice, you set us
up!”
