My Skin Needs Touch, Their Stomachs Turn novel Chapter 38

Chapter 7

I woke up in the hospital. It was the day after Christmas.

Alex was there. His eyes were still swollen.

“Alex.” My voice cracked. “I’m sorry. I ruined your holiday.”

He touched

my

head. His eyes got wet again. “Stupid. I got to see you. Best holiday ever

I’d burned bridges to marry Jon. Fought everyone. Even Alex, who never said no to me, told me not

to go.

I didn’t listen. Stole my papers. Ran off with him in the night.

“Mom and Dad?” I asked, careful.

“Not good. Miss you every day, same as me.” He tapped my nose, pretending to be mad. “Hey. I beat up Jon. Want to see?”

I blinked. Took his phone.

Video.

Two guys holding Jon’s arms. His face was all fear.

“Alex. What are you doing here?”

Alex stood up. Looked like a demon, eyes red. Punched him so hård he went down.

“I’m here because of what you did to my sister.”

Another punch. Another.

Jon’s face swelled up. He stopped moving, just lay there like a dead fish.

Tiffany was screaming, white-faced.

Alex looked at her. Squinted.

“Evie’s clothes. Evie’s jewelry. Evie’s bags.” His voice went cold. “You think my family’s a joke?

Letting some club rat touch her stuff?”

He grabbed Jon’s collar. Slapped him. Twice.

Jon spit blood. Barely conscious. “You got it wrong. Alex, she didn’t want them anymore. I gave them to Tiffany.”

Alex laughed. No humor. “Don’t call me that. You don’t get to.”

“Didn’t want them? Then why was she wearing nothing when I found her? Freezing to death in an underpass?”

His voice broke.

“I gave you my sister. Not for this. Not to turn her into a joke.”

Jon tried to fight back. “No one was laughing at her. You can’t just…”

Alex threw papers at his face.

Headlines. My name. Every single one.

Jon went pale. Quiet.

Alex grabbed his hair. “My lawyers will contact you. Evie’s divorcing you.”

“I’m taking her home. You’ll never touch her again.”

He walked out.
