“She was already losing her mind thinking you were dead,” he said with a casual shrug, his voice completely flat.” I simply gave her a socially acceptable reason for her hysterics.”

“No, you don’t understand!” I paced the room, my mind racing. “She won’t let me leave the house for a year! I had a plan! I was going to tell them I stayed over at a friend’s house andI lost my phone!”

Raphael let out a dry, condescending laugh, “You losing your phone doesn’t explain why you vanished off the GPS grid for six hours, or why your signal last pinged near a warehouse district. “Your plan makes me a victim!” I yelled, frustrated that his cold logic was actually making sense.

He shrugged again, “Unless, of course, you had a better plan? One that involves explaining why you were wearing a silver wig and shaking your ass for twenties? I’m all ears, little sister. I can still call Vince back and tell him the truth.”

“I hate you,” I whispered.

“I know,” he replied, “Now, fix your face. You’re supposed to be traumatized, not annoyed. We’re going home.”

I continued to curse him under my breath, my voice barely a whisper as I trailed behind Raphael. I was exhausted, starving, and currently being managed like a high-risk stock option.
