Chapter 189
Raphael sat there like a statue of judgment, his eyes flicking from his phone to my face with a look of pure disgust.
“Finistred with your sodium intake for the year?” he asked, his voice a dry rasp.
“Almost.” I slapped my last few crumpled bills on the counter, making sure he saw that I was still the one handling the check. I tucked the leftovers under one arm and grabbed the fresh, steaming bag with the other.
I marched out the door and Raphael followed. In the corner of the parking lot, sat an old man in a threadbare coat his eyes downcast.
Without a word, I walked over and set the fresh bag and the milkshake down beside him. He looked up, startled and I gave him a small, quick nod before turning back to the bike.
Raphael was already standing by the Ducati, holding the helmet out. He looked from me to the homeless man, his brow furrowing.
“You realize he’s probably just going to trade that for a bottle of something, right?” he said the moment I reached him.
“And you realize that’s not my business?” I snapped, reaching for the helmet, “He’s hungry. I had money.”
I reached out to take the helmet, but he pulled it back an inch, his eyes dropping to my fingers. “Did you wash your hands? You have grease and salt all over your skin. I’m not having you smear fast-food remnants all over the inside of a four-thousand-dollar helmet.”
I looked at my hands. They were definitely shiny. I looked at him, standing there in his pristine, white designer T- shirt, looking down his nose at me like I was a stray cat.
A wicked thought struck me.
“Oh, you’re right,” I said, “Safety first.”
Before he could react, I stepped into his space and grabbed the front of his shirt. I rubbed my palms vigorously against the expensive fabric, wiping the burger grease and salt right across his chest in two wide streaks.
