Chapter 202
I looked up at him, my arm wrapped firmly around Morgan’s waist to keep her upright.
“That was just the interest and the late f*e for this month,” Cole said, his eyes turning cold and greedy. “You still owe three million dollars. You’ve been paying for two years and you haven’t even touched the first million yet. You’re barely keeping your heads above water.”
He stood up, his tall shadow stretching across the floor until it touched my boots.
I didn’t answer him, I just pulled Morgan closer, guiding her toward the door. The weight of that three million felt like a mountain on my back, but as we stepped out into the cold Chicago night, all I cared about was that she was breathing.
We were alive, and for now, that had to be enough.
The walk back from the dry cleaners felt miles longer than the run there. I had dropped Morgan off at Mama D’s, seeing her tucked into a warm bed with a thick blanket, and that was the only thing keeping me moving.
I found the hidden metal plate near the dumpster. My fingers trembled as I slid it back. I dropped into the dark, damp hole and crawled. The blue cables guided me back, and my hands fumbled until I found the underside of the garage floor. I pushed, the panel lifted, and I scrambled back into the garage, sliding the plate shut with a prayer.
I stayed in the dark corners of the hallways. I didn’t breathe when a guard walked past the end of the corridor. I waited until the sound of his boots faded before I darted up the service stairs.
Finally, I reached my bedroom door. I gripped the handle, turned it slowly, and slipped inside. I slowly closed it until the lock clicked shut with a tiny sound.
I let out a long, shaky breath. I was back. I was safe.
