Chapter 205
My chest tightened, “Why?”
“Because you’re very bad at it.”
My lips parted, ready te argue, but nothing came out. For a second, I forgot what I was supposed to say. Forgot the rules. The distance. The whole carefully built line between us because he didn’t step back.
His thumb was still there, resting just under my cheek like it had nowhere else to go. The coolness of the gel had faded, replaced by the slow warmth of his skin.
“You’re staring,” I said, because I needed to say something.
His gaze didn’t shift, “You’re letting me.”
I huffed out a small breath, trying to shake it off, “You’re very full of yourself.
“Occupational hazard,” he replied, dry.
But his voice had changed again, lower, rougher around the edges.
His hand finally moved but not away. It slid from my cheek to the side of my jaw, his fingers brushing just under my ear before settling lightly at the back of my neck. My spine straightened without permission.
“That’s not part of the treatment,” I said, quieter now.
“No,” he agreed but he still didn’t move it.
I became hyper-aware of everything, his hand, his breath, the way his body angled just slightly toward mine, like gravity had shifted and we hadn’t caught up yet.
Every breath sounded too loud in my head. Mine. His. The steady tick of the clock on the wall. The faint chirp of crickets somewhere out in the garden. It all pressed in at once like the world had turned the volume up just for this moment.
“You should go,” I said.
I didn’t sound convincing.
He exhaled slowly through his nose, like he was considering it.
“Probably,” he said.
My fingers pressed into the duvet beneath me, silk bunching under my grip, “Then go.”
His eyes flicked down again to my mouth then back up.
“You keep saying that,” he murmured.
“And you keep ignoring it.”
A faint, almost amused exhale left him,.”Yeah,” he said, “Not my best quality.”
His hand at my neck shifted slightly, thumb brushing once along the side of my throat. It was light. Barely anything.
