Chapter 222
The moment those words left the guard’s mouth, a cold spike of ice drove straight through my chest. My heart didn’t just speed up, it got out of control. My stomach curdled, and for a second, I thought I might be sick right there on Daddy’s clothes.
It hurts so bad. I don’t want to be in this chair anymore. I try to be a big girl, and I try to stay real still like Daddy wants, but the pain is too big to hide.
When the doctor touches those wires to my skin, I cry and I cry until my throat is sore, and I beg him to please, please stop, but he doesn’t even blink. He just looks at his watches and writes things down in his little book. He doesn’t have any tears in his eyes, and he doesn’t look sorry at all.
But I didn’t move. I didn’t cry. I didn’t let my hands shake. I had learned a long time ago that Daddy loved perfection, and perfection didn’t feel fear. I kept my face still.
“Perfect timing,” Daddy said. He set me down on my feet, but he didn’t let go of my hand. He led me through the house.
We entered the private medical rooms. The doctor was already there, wearing a white coat that looked too bright under the lights.
“Sit, Gianna,” Daddy said, pointing to the chair in the center of the room.
I sat. My legs were too short to reach the floor, so they dangled. The doctor didn’t say hello. He just began to unpack his bag. He laid the items out on a silver tray.
There were long, thin blades that looked like silver needles. There were black wires attached to a small box… the kind of wires that made your muscles jump and your teeth ache. There were glass vials filled with liquid the color of my bruised skin.
