Chapter 255
Vance stepped back, “See? I knew you had it in you. Fear is a wonderful teacher.”
He started to untie my arms, leaving me there shaking and broken on the stretcher. I had done it but as i lay there, cold and wet, I felt like the girl who couldn’t read had died under that towel, and someone else was taking her place.
“Do you have any idea what your father said to me today?” he barked. He grabbed the edge of the metal stretcher and shook it so hard my teeth rattled. “He told me if you don’t show ‘significant improvement’ by the end of the, week, I won’t leave this building alive. He put a gun on the table, Gianna. A gun!”
“I’m sorry,” I choked out, the salt from my tears stinging the raw skin on my cheeks, “I’m trying, I swear-”
“You’re trying?” he roared, leaning down until his spit hit my face. “Your ‘trying’ is going to get me killed! I am a man of science! I am a doctor! I am not dying because you’re too lazy!”
He grabbed the thick towel again. He didn’t lay it down gently this time, he shoved it over my mouth and nose with so much force I felt my lips bruise against my teeth.
He didn’t use the pitcher. He grabbed the large gallon jug of water and tipped it straight over my face.
It wasn’t a stream, it was a flood. The water slammed into the cloth, sealing it against my skin like a vacuum. It was instant. I couldn’t even get that one last gasp of air. My lungs hit a wall of liquid.
I went into a frenzy. My body didn’t feel like mine anyinore, it was just a ball of pure, terrified instinct. I thrashed so hard the heavy metal stretcher began to slide across the floor with a horrible screeching sound. The leather straps dug deep into my wrists, the skin tearing, but I didn’t care. I needed air. I needed to breathe.
He didn’t stop. He kept the jug tilted, the water pouring and pouring. The world started to turn grey. Then it started to turn black.
I’m dying. This is it. I’m finally going to be still.
