Chapter 287
I didn’t answer. I just watched Gianna take a bite of a strawberry that Mr. Dental Model was practically feeding her. I felt a surge of heat go up my neck. My fingers were itching. My heart was thumping a rhythm that had nothing to do with logic and everything to do with the way she was looking at him.
I wasn’t jealous. I didn’t do jealousy. I just didn’t like seeing my “little sister” being handled by a guy who looked like he’d melt if he stood too close to a lightbulb.
“Tell me more, Viviane,” I said, “Tell me how you’d break into a system when the person holding the key is a complete idiot.”
I didn’t look at Viviane as I said it. I looked straight at Gianna. Finally, she looked back. For one second, our eyes locked through the candlelight. I didn’t smile. I didn’t move. I just let her see the cold, dark storm in my eyes, hoping she could feel the temperature in the room dropping.
She didn’t look away. She just tilted her head and went back to her conversation, leaving me sitting there.
“You know, Raphael,” Viviane whispered.
I didn’t turn my head, “What?”
She leaned in, her red hair falling over her shoulder as she lowered her voice so only I could hear.
She flicked her eyes down the table toward Gianna and then back to me, “If you’re so jealous of the guy talking to your little stepsister, maybe you should actually do something about it. Because from where I’m sitting, you look like a dog watching a bone through a window. Very un-Capone of you.”
I felt the heat rush to my face, a sudden, stinging burn. I wanted to snap back at her, to tell her she was dead wrong and that she didn’t know what she was talking about. But then I saw the knowing look in her eyes and realized the truth, I was being too fucking obvious.
