He turned onto his side, pressing his front directly against my back. His broad, bare chest was a solid wall of heat against my spine. Then, he lifted his other arm, bringing it over my waist and pulling me backward until there was absolutely no space left between us.

He tucked me in close. I was completely trapped in his arms, held fast against his massive, hard body/ But it wasn’t a scary kind of trapped. It was warm. It was cozily tight, like a heavy blanket protecting me from the cold morning air.

As I lay there, my heart thumping softly, I couldn’t help but think about how my body fit against his. I was skinny, built light and flexible from all the years of ballet, and he was so big, solid, and broad. Yet, as he held me from behind, every single curve of my back slid perfectly into the hollows of his chest and stomach. It was like two pieces of a puzzle clicking together in the dark. My head was tucked right under his chin, his slow, deep breaths moving the hair on the crown of my head.

We fit.

We fit so perfectly it made my throat feel tight.

I closed my eyes, letting myself sink into the comforting warmth of him, thinking that maybe we could just stay like this until the sun was high in the sky.

And then, his voice broke the quiet.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

My entire body went instantly stiff.

My breath caught in my throat, my eyes snapping open. The smile vanished from my face. I stopped moving, stopped breathing, my muscles locking tight as the simple words hung in the room.

I remained completely still, my back pressed against his chest, my heart beating fast.

Raphael let out a long, rough sigh. His breath was hot against the back of my neck, making my skin goosebump. His arm, wrapped tight around my waist, squeezed me just a little harder, pulling me back into his hard body.

“You win,” he murmured, and then let out a dry laugh, “You win, Gianna.”
