Chapter 351
A giant ball of fire and thick black smoke shot high into the air, the extreme heat blasting against my face and blowing my hair back. The metal frames of the pumps twisted and melted in the bright orange light, destroying every single piece of evidence left behind.
Raphael tucked his glock back into his holster with a smooth slide. The roaring heat from the burning gas station painted his face in bright shades of orange and yellow, but he did not give the fire another single glance.
He swung his long leg over the motorcycle, settling onto the leather seat. He didn’t put his helmet back on. Instead, he reached out with both of his hands, wrapping them gently around my waist. With one easy lift, he picked my entire body up off the pavement.
Instead of putting me behind him, he pulled me straight onto the wide, cold metal of the fuel tank right in front of him. He positioned me so that I was facing him completely, with my legs wrapped around his waist and my back
to the handlebars.
Panic instantly flared up in my chest. I scrambled to balance myself, my hands shaking as I tried not to drop the big bag of potato chips and the two heavy blue slushies squished between our chests. My heart started drumming fast against my ribs again as I looked at how high up and exposed I was.
“Raphael, wait!” I cried out. I gripped his broad shoulders tightly with my elbows, my eyes wide with fear, “This isn’t safe…”
His hands stayed locked against my hips, holding me so securely against his chest that I felt like a part of the bike itself. He leaned forward slightly, bringing his handsome face just inches away from mine.
“You are safe whenever I am around you, Gianna,” he said and squeezed my waist just a little tighter, “Never doubt that, not for a single second.”
I looked into his eyes, and just like before, the wild panic in my brain began to quiet down. The weight of his hands and the absolute certainty in his deep voice made the fear melt away. I let out a long breath, my muscles. finally relaxing as I settled against the metal tank, realizing he would never let me fall.
Raphael kept his eyes on mine for a moment longer, making sure I was completely calm. Then, his gaze drifted down to the two plastic cups squeezed between us. The bright blue, icy liquid was swirling inside the clear plastic.
A small, curious look passed over his face. He leaned his head down, wrapping his lips around the plastic straw of the slushie closest to him. He took a long, deep sip, his throat moving as he swallowed the freezing cold liquid.
Instantly, his entire face twisted up.
His dark eyebrows slammed together, and his lips pulled back into a disgusted grimace. He let out a loud, rough cough, hacking slightly as his chest jerked against mine. He turned his head to the side, shaking his head violently like he had just swallowed poison.
“Fucking hell,” Raphael choked out, his voice rough and raspy as he wiped his mouth with the back of his hand,” That is terrible. It is too much sugar. It tastes like pure, chemical syrup.”
I stared at him for a second, completely stunned by his dramatic reaction, and then a loud, bright laugh bubbled right out of my throat.
I shook my head, holding the cups tightly as I looked at the deadly monster who had just destroyed a whole store, now completely defeated by a sweet convenience store drink.
The sound of my own laughter felt strange in the warm morning air, I looked at Raphael’s handsome, twisted

face, and before my brain could even think about it, my fingers simply let go.
The two heavy plastic cups and the large bag of potato chips slipped right out of my hands. They hit the cold pavement below with a loud, wet splat. The blue slushie spilled out, and the bag of chips popped open, scattering the salty white pieces everywhere.
