Chapter 363
“It’s a recorder,” I told him, “I have been recording every single session. Every single scream, every test, every word that horrible doctor said to me. I’ve been doing it for six months. And in two days, I am going to meet my mother again. I am going to give her this bear. She is going to save me.”
Leone stayed completely still on his knees, his face turning incredibly tense.
“She is building a legal case,” I rushed out, the words tumbling out of my mouth as I leaned closer to him, wanting him to share my happiness, “She has a lawyer. With these recordings, she will have total custody of me, She will take me far away from daddy, and that doctor will go straight to prison forever. Daddy won’t be able to stop her this time. The pain will finally be gone.”
He stared at me, his breathing suddenly becoming shallow and heavy.
“Your mother,” Leone repeated, “She is going to take you away? Far away from this house?”
“Yes,” I nodded, wiping a tear from my cheek with the back of my hand.
“Away from me?” Leone asked, his dark eyes locking onto mine with a look that suddenly terrified me, “She is going to take you away from me, Gianna?”
My breath hitched, and I immediately reached out, grabbing his face with both of my hands, forcing him to look at how much I loved him.
“No,” I promised him, “No, Leone. Never. I will never leave you. We will find a way. I won’t ever let her take me away from you.”
He surged up from his knees, his chest heaving as he stared down at me, his fists clenching so hard his knuckles turned completely white.
“No!” Leone roared, “No one is taking you anywhere, Gianna! Your mother has no right over you. None! You are my wife. You are my girl. You belong here, with me, in this house!”
“Leone, please listen to me,” I begged, “Don’t you want me to be fine? Don’t you want me to be free of the pain?”
“Not like this,” he hissed.
“This has to happen!” I cried out, my voice cracking as I reached up to touch his chest, trying to make him understand the nightmare I lived in every single day, “There is no other way, Leone! If I stay here, that doctor will keep hurting me. My father will keep letting him. Do you want them to keep burning me? Do you want them to break my brain until there is nothing left of me?”
Leone let out a harsh, angry breath through his nose, his eyes darting down to the red burns on my thighs before snapping back to my face.
“I will never leave you,” I promised, and threw my arms around his thick neck, pulling my body tight against his warm chest, “I swear to you, Leone. I will never leave your side. My mother will take me away from the pain, but I will come back for you. We will grow up, I will marry you, and we will be together forever and ever. Nobody can keep us apart.”
I buried my face deep into his shoulder, sobbing into his neck, holding onto him with every ounce of strength I had left in my arms.
Leone stood there completely stiff for three long beats. Then with a defeated sound, Leone slowly raised his arms. He wrapped them around my waist, reluctantly hugging me back, pulling me into his chest.
