She started walking toward the path without looking at me, and I followed her immediately, “Can we not do this right now?”

She kept walking faster through the trees while I stayed right behind her.

“Seriously,” I said, “What the fuck did I do this time?”

“Nothing.”

The closer we got to the lights near the main grounds, the more closed off she became. I could physically see her retreating back into herself. It made something uncomfortable settle under my ribs.

“Gianna.”

She stopped so suddenly I almost walked into her then she turned around. Her eyes hit mine with enough force to stop me cold.

“No reason, okay?” she snapped. “You didn’t do anything.”

I opened my mouth immediately, but she beat me to it.

“I just…” her voice cracked slightly before she swallowed it back down, “I need a shower.”

The anger drained out of her face too quickly after that and suddenly she just looked exhausted.

“I feel gross,” she said quietly.

My jaw tightened instantly, “You feel gross because of me?”

Her eyes widened slightly like she hadn’t expected that question then she looked down at the dirt on her legs instead.

“I don’t know,” she admitted softly, “I just need to wash everything off.”

I stepped closer before I even thought about it. “Mess.”

She flinched a little at the nickname this time and that bothered me even more. I reached for her arm carefully, but she pulled away before I could touch her.

“I’m tired, Raphael.”

I stared at her for a long second before exhaling slowly through my nose, “Fine,” I muttered, taking a step back.

I dropped into the leather chair in front of the main monitors and rolled my neck slowly. My muscles still felt tight from chasing her through the woods.

Worth it.

A faint sound of running water echoed from the private bathroom down the hall.

Then I unlocked my phone and opened the delivery app automatically because I already knew what was going to happen in about twenty minutes.

She was going to come out of that shower starving.
