I walked farther into the room and grabbed the bottle of water off the desk. Mostly because it gave me something to do with my hands.

I took a slow drink.

“You investigated my ex fiancé.”

“Yes.”

Her stare sharpened instantly at how easily I admitted it, “You say that like it’s normal.”

“It is normal.”

“For you, maybe!”

She pushed wet hair back from her face aggressively. Her eyes were still slightly red from earlier, but now there was anger sitting underneath it.

“I left him years ago,” she continued. “Years, Raphael. I don’t even live in the same city anymore. I don’t speak to him. I don’t see him. So why the hell are you digging through his life?”

I leaned against the desk, “He contacted you.”

“One text message!”

“He’s a high-ranking underboss in an active crime syndicate, Gianna.”

“And he is also someone I loved!” she snapped, “Did that little detail make it into your creepy little report too, or did you leave that part out?”

My jaw tightened slightly. The app voice continued calmly reading from the page in her lap.
