“I don’t know how to do whatever this conversation is,” I admitted finally.

That made her look back at me again. There were tears sitting in her eyes now, even though she clearly hated that I could see them.

“I know,” she whispered.

Her fingers moved restlessly against the edge of the file in her hands, smoothing wrinkles that didn’t exist anymore just to give herself something to do.

I stayed where I was, watching her carefully.

Trying to understand where the hell this conversation had gone wrong.

A few hours ago she’d been laughing while hanging upside down from my tree. Now she looked like I’d just shattered something inside her without even noticing.

Finally, she spoke again, “Maybe we shouldn’t have done this.”

I frowned immediately, “Done what?”

Her eyes lifted slowly toward mine, “This,” she gestured vaguely between us, “Whatever this thing is.”

I stared at her for a second, genuinely confused, “Why?”

A soft, disbelieving laugh left her, “Seriously?”” 1

That seemed to frustrate her all over again. She tossed the file onto the desk harder than necessary before crossing her arms tightly over herself.

“We’re step siblings sleeping together in secret,” she snapped, “That’s not exactly healthy behavior, Raphael.”

“We already established it’s fucked up.”

“That was before.”

“Before what?”

“Before it started…” She stopped herself abruptly and shook her head. “Forget it.”

I watched her closely, “No. Finish that sentence.”

She pressed her lips together stubbornly. Then finally exhaled hard through her nose, “What are we even doing?” she asked quietly, “Like realistically. Long term.”

Long term?

I honestly hadn’t thought that far ahead. Why would I? Things between us worked. More than worked. We barely fought besides whatever the hell this current conversation was.

We liked being around each other.

The sex was insane.

She understood my schedule.

I understood hers.

There were rules.
