Chapter 411
“Who’s here?”
My brain moved fast. Not because I was nervous about Gianna specifically. Nervous wasn’t the right word.
Protective was.
Very different problem.
“One of the girls from the hunt.”
Adriano went very still at that answer. Vincenzo’s eyes narrowed slightly like he was deciding whether he believed me or not.
“And where is she now?”
“Inside the panel,” I told him the truth.
I folded the lace into my fist without thinking.
Behind the hidden black glass panel ten feet away, Gianna was probably hearing every single second of this conversation while trying not to breathe too loudly.
Adriano suddenly stood from the chair with the exhausted energy of a man who wanted absolutely no involvement in whatever disaster was currently unfolding.
“You know what?” he announced, “I actually don’t care about mystery women at all. Shocking personal growth for me.”
Vincenzo kept watching me carefully. My older brother knew me too well. And unfortunately for me, he was in one of those moods tonight where his brain worked even faster than usual.
“You brought some random fucking girl into the control room?” he asked slowly.
When I didn’t answer fast enough, Vincenzo let out a short laugh that held absolutely no humor in it and dragged a blood-covered hand down his mouth.
“You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me. You’re supposed to be running security for half the Outfit from this room,” he continued, stepping closer, “Every camera feed. Every gate. Every patrol route. Every panic lock in this compound runs through these systems.”
His eyes dropped to the lace still clenched in my fist.
“And instead you’re back here playing hide the fucking bra with some girl?”
Adriano took a step back like a man distancing himself from an incoming explosion.
“Okay,” he said carefully, holding both hands up. “To be fair, maybe she’s important to him.”
