Chapter 439
Gianna
The silence that followed Raphael’s words felt painfully heavy.
It settled over the entire dining room, the excitement died down. Nobody reached for their coffee, nobody touched their food.
I sat perfectly still in my chair, my fingers wrapped around my coffee mug so tightly my hands hurt.
Across the table, Raphael looked exactly the same as always like he had just announced a canceled business meeting instead of the end of something that had completely destroyed me.
My heartbeat wouldn’t slow down. Every thump felt too loud. I kept staring at my plate because I was terrified somebody would look at me and somehow know.
Somehow see everything written across my face.
“What do you mean she ended things?” Vincenzo’s voice cut through the silence.
I looked up before I could stop myself and Raphael looked at me at the same time, reaching for his coffee,” Exactly what it sounds like.”
Vincenzo seemed confused, “Why?”
For a second Raphael said nothing then he took a slow drink, set the cup down and answered, “You scared her.”
My stomach dropped.
Vincenzo let out a scoff, “I scared her?”
“Yes. You came into a room covered in blood,” Raphael rested one arm on the table, “You talked about disposing of bodies and then you threatened her.”
I peeked a look at him and Vincenzo looked offended, “I did not threaten her.”
“You did,” Raphael stated.
“I threatened you.”
“She was standing ten feet away.”
Claire slowly turned her head towards Vincenzo, “You threatened his girlfriend.”
I risked a glance toward Vincenzo and suddenly, he looked strangely human, like he was somehow the victim in this conversation, “I didn’t threaten her.”
Raphael didn’t even look up from his coffee, “You did.”
“No.”
“You did.”
“I was talking to you.”
Everyone in the family talked about how Claire was the only one capable of making Vincenzo rethink his life choices and now, I was seeing it too.
