The ache in my chest hadn’t gone away. I wasn’t sure it would anytime soon but I need to get over it now.

Something eased Vincenzo’s face, “Good girl. As soon as the paperwork is signed, we’ll discuss the apartment.

My chest tightened again, but I forced myself to nod, “Okay.”

Vincenzo turned toward Adriano, “The documents.”

Adriano blinked, “What documents?”

“The adoption papers I gave you three weeks ago.”

“Oh.”

Something in Adriano’s tone immediately made Vincenzo’s eyes narrow.

“Oh?” Vincenzo repeated.

Adriano rubbed the back of his neck, “Funny story.”

Vincenzo closed his eyes, “What did you do?”

“I didn’t do anything.”

“What happened to the papers?”

Adriano pointed toward the ceiling, “Nero happened. The kid is currently in a phase where everything goes into his mouth. Furniture, toys, shoes, remote controls, human fingers…” he paused, “The adoption papers.”

Vincenzo stared at him, “You lost legal documents to a baby.”

“I didn’t lose them.”

“You just said he ate them.”

“Exactly. That’s not losing them. We know where they went.”

Vincenzo pinched the bridge of his nose so hard I was surprised he didn’t break it. Finally he looked toward Raphael, “Tell Dante to draft new ones.”

Raphael nodded once, “I’ll have them on your desk tomorrow before breakfast.”

Vincenzo looked back at me, “You can go.”

I pushed myself out of the chair. I took a step toward the door, then another and as I passed Raphael, my eyes lifted automatically.
