Chapter 464
“We didn’t talk,” I replied softly. The memory was so vivid I could almost smell the perfume she was wearing that night, “We didn’t exchange a single word. We didn’t need to. She danced for me.”
Adriano raised an eyebrow, “Ballet?”
“Something like that,” I whispered.
I didn’t tell him that she hadn’t been wearing a white tutu or dancing to classical music on a grand stage. I didn’t tell him that she had been wearing a tiny, scraps of black lace that left her soft skin completely bare under the flashing neon lights. I didn’t tell him that her eyes locked onto mine while the rest of the crowded room disappeared into nothingness. I kept that private piece buried deep inside my own mind.
Adriano shook his head, “Seriously, though, what the fuck is it with you and these dancers? Every time you actually show a sliver of interest in a woman, she’s always some girl who moves for a living. What is that?”/
I shrugged lightly, my fingers tracing the edge of the keyboard without really noticing I was doing it, “I find the movement of their bodies… mesmerizing,” I said more quietly this time, “Most people don’t move like they mean it. Everything is a bit off. A bit rushed. Like their bodies are always a second behind their thoughts.”
I leaned back slightly, eyes unfocused for a moment as the memory surfaced.
“But she didn’t move like that,” I continued. “It was… clean, like nothing in her body was arguing with itself… just flowed. As if she didn’t have to think about it at all. It was quiet,” I added. “Even though she was moving, it felt quiet. I’ve never seen anything move like that before. It didn’t feel human.”
I glanced briefly at Adriano, then away again.
“And I couldn’t stop thinking about it.”
Adriano stepped closer to my chair. I could feel him before I saw him properly.
“Look, Raph, I know this whole situation is completely fucked,” he said, “And I know what I’m about to say is so goddamn twisted, it’s out of line even by my standards.”
That made my jaw tighten a little, “Then don’t say it,” I replied flatly.
He ignored me.
That was Adriano.
He pulled a breath in through his nose, slower this time, like he was choosing every word on purpose.
