Chapter 492
And for the first time since leaving Gianna’s room, I allowed myself to admit something. The reason her words hurt wasn’t because they were true. The reason they hurt was because they weren’t.
Because nobody had ever loved me the way my mother did and nobody ever would again.
I heard the crunch of gravel, I didn’t turn around immediately. I already knew who it was.
Nobody else came to this part of the cemetery, it was Capone property. Adriano walked through life like a wrecking ball. Dante wasn’t much better. A second later, two shadows appeared beside me.
“What are you two doing here?” I asked flatly.
Adriano sighed, “The same thing you’re doing, dickhead.”
Dante stepped forward, holding a handful of fresh white roses, “We came to see Mom.”
For a moment, all three of us just stood, just three grown men standing in front of the woman who had once tucked them into bed and kissed their foreheads.
Dante placed his roses beside mine. Adriano followed.
Then Adriano suddenly laughed.
Dante frowned immediately, “What the fuck are you laughing at?”
I looked at him. Adriano was staring at the grave with the strangest grin on his face.
He crouched down slowly. His fingers brushed across the marble, “Mom,” he said, “Mom, I’m about to tell you something that would’ve made your entire fucking year.”
Dante sighed.
I pinched the bridge of my nose.
Adriano pointed directly at me, “Your favorite little genius is completely screwed.”
I already hated where this was going.
Dante looked between us, “What are you talking about?”
Adriano’s smile became vicious, “Raphael is in love.”
Dante blinked, “No.”
Adriano nodded happily, “Oh yes.”
Dante turned toward me, “Who?”
Adriano answered before I could, “Gianna.”
Dante’s entire face froze. For several long seconds, he simply stared at me. His expression suggested he had just witnessed a serious traffic accident and wasn’t sure how many people survived.
“Our Gianna?” he finally asked.
I sighed, “She’s not-”
Dante held up a hand, “I need a second,” hee looked away, then looked back, then away again like his brain was rebooting, “Our stepsister?”
I rubbed my face, “Technically-”
“Our. Stepsister.”
The way he emphasized every word made me feel irrationally violent.
Adriano turned back toward the grave, “Mom, if Hazel wasn’t already sick, Raphael would’ve accidentally destroyed Dad’s marriage.”
I glared at him.
