Chapter 519

Gianna

The stage was dark, not completely but just enough light to reveal the outline of a small wooden chair sitting alone in the center.

The music hadn’t started yet, he audience was silent and I know that there were thousands of people, watching and waiting.

I stood motionless in the darkness, my heart beating steadily beneath my ribs.

The necklace rested against my skin, the tiny diamond felt heavier than it should have, then the first note sounded.

A single piano key. It was soft and lonely. The spotlight appeared and I stepped into it like I was someone afraid of being seen.

The theater disappeared, the audience disappeared, the lights disappeared.

There was only the music.

And me.

My bare arms wrapped around my stomach as I took another step forward, small steps… hesitant steps. The kind a child takes when they don’t know if they’re safe. My shoulders curved inward, my head lowered.

The piano continued.

I reached the chair, my fingers touched the back of it then immediately pulled away. The movement earned a murmur from somewhere in the audience.

I circled the chair slowly, never fully turning my back to it, never fully relaxing, my body remained tight and alert.

Waiting, the way frightened children wait. The way they learn to listen for footsteps, for voices, for doors opening, for danger.

The music shifted.

A violin joined the piano. I lowered myself onto the chair, perched on the edge. Ready to run, ready to leave, ready for something bad to happen.

My hands folded tightly in my lap, my gaze fixed on the floor. I stayed there for several seconds, completely still.

Then my head lifted suddenly as though I had heard something,

The audience couldn’t hear it but I could. The memory, the fear, the waiting.

My body reacted before my mind did and I stood quickly, the chair scraped slightly across the stage.

My breathing changed, the music grew louder, strings pulling tighter, tighter, and tighter.

I began to dance, not the graceful ballet people expected. This movement wasn’t about beauty. It was about survival.

My arms folded around myself, opened, closed again, one step forward, two steps back. A turn that stopped halfway. A leap that never fully committed. Everything interrupted, everything unfinished like a child learning

The choreography pulled me across the stage, then back again, then back again, never escaping, always returning, always trapped inside the same small circle.

The spotlight followed, the circle felt smaller each time.

My chest rose sharply, the music climbed. I lifted onto pointe, balanced and reaching upward, just for a second, like a little girl hoping, dreaming, wanting something, anything.

Then the orchestra struck a harsh note.

My body folded immediately, the hope disappeared. I could feel the audience watching. I could feel them understanding.

The next sequence was slower, and harder for me because every movement felt heavy, like walking throughy water, like carrying something invisible.

The stage suddenly felt enormous, empty and cold. I stood alone in the center of it, one small figure surrounded by darkness.

The piano returned and I sank to my knees, not gracefully, just tired, so tired. My hands rested against the floor, my head bowed. The audience couldn’t see my face anymore. Only the shape of a little girl curled inward, protecting herself.

The final notes drifted through the theater one by one until only silence remained.

I stayed perfectly still curled on the floor, breathing hard. The darkness slowly returned, swallowing the stage, swallowing the little girl and as the lights faded completely, the first life came to an end.

Then the music changed, the soft sounds from before disappeared. A sharp violin note cut through the theater like invisible walls were closing around me.
