Chapter 550
He noticed immediately, “What?”
I pointed, “You.”
He looked down at the burger then back at me, “Yes.”
“You’re eating that.”
“That is generally how food works.”
I couldn’t believe this, “You eat healthier than anyone I’ve ever met. Every meal is carefully planned. Everything has protein, vegetables, vitamins, minerals, and whatever other things your body apparently requires to function at maximum efficiency.”
“I eat other things.”
“No you don’t.”
“I do.”
“I’ve never seen it.”
“Well, I ate your pussy quite a lot. Didn’t hear you complaining then…”
My jaw dropped. I stared at him and my left eye twitched. Did he just say what I think he just said?
Raphael calmly continued eating like he hadn’t just launched my soul directly into the sun.
He chewed calmly, swallowed, then lifted an eyebrow, “Are you having a medical emergency?”
That did it.
I grabbed the nearest napkin and threw it directly at his head.
For the rest of dinner, he continued making dry comments with a completely straight face, each one somehow worse than the last. Every time I recovered, he said something else and sent me right back into another fit of laughter.
At some point my cheeks started hurting, at another point I almost spilled my drink. Raphael looked entirely too pleased with himself. The worst part was that he never seemed to be trying.
He would simply say something outrageous in the calmest voice imaginable and then watch me fall apart.
By the time we finished eating, the plates had been cleared away and my stomach hurt from laughing almost as much as it hurt from the food.
The lake shimmered beyond the windows of the pavilion, silver moonlight dancing across the dark water.
I glanced outside and immediately made a decision, “I want to go down there.”
Raphael followed my gaze toward the shoreline, “The beach?”
I nodded.
“Right now?”
I nodded again.
A brief silence followed.
Then one corner of his mouth lifted, “You’re lucky I can’t say no to you.”
My heart did a small, embarrassing little flip.
And the moment we stepped outside, the cold air wrapped around us.
The lake stretched endlessly beside us, dark and silver beneath the moonlight. Gentle waves rolled onto the shore, washing over smooth stones before retreating again.
Without a word, Raphael draped his jacket over my shoulders.
We started walking. For a while, neither of us spoke. The silence felt easy, and comfortable. Our footsteps left shallow marks in the sand. The water glimmered beside us.
Then I looked sideways at him.
Raphael was staring out at the water, hands in his pockets, looking impossibly serious for someone who had just eaten a burger.
A burger.
