Chapter 572
His fingers remained warm against my neck while my hands instinctively caught the front of his jacket.
I kissed him back without thinking, without caring that someone could walk around the corner at any second.
When he finally pulled away, neither of us moved very far. Our foreheads almost touched. I looked up at him and looked back at me. For one long moment… we simply smiled.
My fingers straightened the lapel of his jacket even though it didn’t need straightening, “You’ll be late.”
His thumb brushed lightly against the side of my neck before he let his hand fall away, “I’ll come by tonight.”
My heartbeat immediately sped up, “You will?”
He nodded once, “After everyone’s asleep.”
For another second, neither of us moved. Then Raphael stepped back, gave me one last look, and turned toward the estate.
Raphael had barely taken three steps before another voice cut through the quiet garden, “Excuse me.”
The two of us turned at the same time. Jules stood a few feet away with both arms folded tightly across her chest. Her foot tapped against the stone path.
She looked between both of us suspiciously, “I have a question.”
Raphael stopped politely, “Go ahead, Jewel.”
She narrowed her eyes and then turned to me, “I thought we hated him.”
I froze, “Oh…”
Raphael slowly turned his head toward me. His eyebrows pulled together, “You hate me?” there wasn’t any accusation in his voice, only genuine confusion, “…Why?”
“Oh, no.” I grabbed his arm immediately. “No, that’s not-”
Jules pointed dramatically at him, “You broke her heart.”
Raphael blinked, “I did?”
“Yes, you did!” Jules snapped.
He looked back at me, looking even more confused than before, “When?”
I let out the most embarrassed groan of my life, “It was after…” I rubbed my forehead. “…after we ended the arrangement.”
His expression stayed blank.
I sighed, “That night.”
Realization slowly crossed his face, “But you broke up with me…”
I nodded, “Because I already loved you by then.”
His eyes softened immediately.
