Chapter 603
Raphael
Adriano’s arms were capable, but they were not mine.
I stepped forward before his arms could even settle into a permanent hold. I took her from him, sliding my hands beneath her knees and behind her shoulders, careful not to disturb the bandage wrapped around her head.
I kept her head slightly elevated against my shoulder instead of letting it fall back. The blow she’d taken was still fresh. The last thing she needed was her neck rolling with every movement.
Her cheek rested against my chest, her damp lashes still clinging together from tears. Every few seconds, her breathing caught before settling again.
I watched it, it was regular, no choking, no sudden pause. Her pulse still fluttered quickly beneath the side of her neck, but it was steady enough.
I adjusted my grip another inch, making sure her injured side wasn’t pressed against me. Even unconscious, her brows remained pinched together. As though whatever she’d seen hadn’t let go.
My thumb brushed a loose strand of hair away from the edge of the dressing. Fresh blood hadn’t spread any farther. She needed a trauma surgeon. A CT scan, an observation.
Preferably all within the next thirty minutes.
I didn’t spare a single glance for the corpse cooling on the concrete. Denise was a closed file. Vincenzo and Adriano turned their attention towards where Mercer was trying to crawl away.
He was a pathetic sight. His hand was a ruined, pulpy mess from Dante’s boot, and his face was swollen where he’d hit the concrete.
Cole turned, his face wet with snot and tears, his eyes darting between my brothers like a trapped rat.
“Please!” Cole sobbed, “I told you! I kept her safe! I didn’t want this! I just wanted to make sure… I just wanted to make sure there was no heat on me!”
