Chapter 625
The warmth muffled the sounds around me. I went a little lower. The water touched my lips. Everything became quieter and then I let myself sink beneath the surface.
The water folded over my ears and I heard the real silence. I kept my eyes closed. The water pressed gently around me. My lungs slowly began asking for air.
Just…
One more second.
Another heartbeat.
Another.
Just let go. Just stay here forever. It’s better this way. It’s easier for everyone if you don’t come back up.
I ruin everything. I make everyone’s life harder. If I wasn’t alive, Denise wouldn’t have become a monster.
Vincenzo wouldn’t have to bleed people in dark basements. Raphael wouldn’t have to waste his perfect, beautiful mind taking care of a girl who is completely defective.
Strong hands suddenly caught beneath my arms. The water exploded around me. I gasped as I was pulled upright. Air slammed into my lungs and I coughed hard as water ran down my face and hair.
“What the hell are you doing?”
I blinked through the water.
Raphael.
His shirt was soaked across the front. His sleeves clung to his arms, both of his hands were gripping my shoulders so tightly I could feel them trembling.
His breathing was fast, too fast. He searched my face over and over, his eyes moving from my pupils to the bandage around my head.
“I…” I coughed again, “I was just-”
“No,” his answer came immediately, “You have a concussion. You are taking medication that slows your reactions,
” his hands slid to either side of my face, “What if you had blacked out? What if you hadn’t come back up?”
I stared at him and he looked… terrified.
He swallowed hard, “You were completely underwater. You weren’t moving.”
My heart twisted, “I wasn’t…”
Before I understood what he was doing… he pulled me against his chest carefully. Protecting my injured head with one hand. His other arm wrapped around my back. His heartbeat was pounding so hard I could feel it through his soaked shirt.
