Chapter 632
My heartbeat became louder.
“They were saying…” Jasmine stopped, clearly wishing she didn’t have to repeat it, “…that the Capones made an example out of him.”
“They said…” Tasha continued carefully, “…they mutilated him. They wanted everyone there to understand what happens when someone touches what’s theirs.”
Images flashed through my mind. Raphael standing in front of me. Blood and then darkness. I remembered collapsing. I remembered nothing after that.
“I don’t know what happened after I passed out.”
Jasmine looked down at the pavement, “The stories keep getting worse every time someone tells them. They’re saying he lost an arm. They’re saying, they threw part of him to the estate dogs.”
“They could all be rumors,” Tasha said quickly. “People always exaggerate after something like this. But… Nobody has seen him, not even his men.”
She looked back toward the Medical Examiner’s building.
“If someone killed Morgan, Emma, and Brianna after you passed out…” she paused, “…who had control of that place?”
My mouth opened but nothing came out.
“The Capones,” Tasha whispered, “They were the only ones left and we’re scared, Gianna, please, we’re so scared. I know, I know that you shouldn’t even talk to us after what happened but Jas and I have no one in our corner. We’re next, Gianna… they are going to kill us. We’re next.”
My chest tightened.
Raphael’s voice echoed through my mind, “I never touched them.”
I could still hear him saying it without any hesitation. I squeezed my eyes shut. He hadn’t looked like he was lying. He had looked… hurt. As though it mattered that I believed him.
I opened my eyes again, “…Raph told me they didn’t.”
Tasha spoke gently, “I’m not saying Raphael pulled the trigger. But people like him…” she searched for the right words, “They don’t always do everything themselves.”
Raphael had promised me the girls weren’t hurt by his family.
I believed he believed that but… Had he actually seen them leave alive or had someone simply reported back to him?
Across the parking lot, Raphael looked up.
