Chapter 638
“No,” he admitted, “It isn’t but from where I’m standing, it feels frighteningly close.”
I wanted to argue. I wanted to tell him my love wasn’t a burning building. That Raphael wasn’t trapped with me. That every single day he woke up and chose me anyway.
But before either of us could speak…
The door flew open so hard it slammed against the wall.
Mom’s nurse stumbled inside, her face completely drained of color, “Mr. Capone!”
Salvatore was on his feet before she finished speaking, “What happened?”
“Mrs. Capone…” her breathing came in short, panicked bursts, “She’s having another cardiac event. Her heart rate dropped suddenly. Her oxygen levels are falling. We’ve called an ambulance, but they want her transferred to the hospital immediately.”
My heart stopped.
For one endless second, my brain refused to understand the words.
Another cardiac event.
No.
Not Mom.
Not again.
I ran.
My bare feet slapped against the floor as Salvatore reached the bedroom first. I was only a step behind him.
The room had changed completely, the peaceful quiet from earlier was gone.
One of the nurses was already lowering the head of Mom’s bed while another adjusted the oxygen flowing through the tubing beneath her nose.
The heart monitor screamed, not beeped, it screamed. A sharp, continuous alarm filled the room.
Mom’s chest rose in short, uneven jerks. Every breath looked like work. Her lips had lost their color, turning pale with a faint blue tint around the edges.
The numbers on the monitor kept changing so quickly I couldn’t keep up.
One of the nurses clipped another sensor onto her finger, “Blood pressure dropping. I can’t get a good oxygen reading.”
“Increase the oxygen,” another shouted.
“I already have,”
Mom’s eyes were half open, they weren’t looking at anyone. They stared somewhere above us.
“Mom…” my voice disappeared beneath the alarms. I hurried to her bedside, reaching for her hand. It felt colder than it had only a few minutes ago, “Mom.”
