“I don’t want you, I want my dad…” I whispered.

He exhaled slowly and rubbed both hands over his face before letting them fall, “Then you’re leaving me with no choice. If you’re determined to see Giovanni, I’m going to tell Vincenzo. I’m going to tell Raphael too. Everything. Everything your father put you through.”

My fingers twitched.

“Hazel begged me never to bring it up. She believed forcing those memories back on you would only hurt you again but if you’ve forgotten enough to think walking back into his life is safe then maybe you deserve to know exactly why your mother spent years trying to keep him away from you.”

For a second, I couldn’t hear anything. Then I turned my head toward him completely.

“If you do that… I’ll tell Raphael everything.”

Salvatore frowned, “And what would that be?”

“I’ll tell him what you said to me,” his expression changed immediately, “I’ll tell him you threatened me. I’ll tell him you told me to stay away from him. I’ll tell him you called me his bed warmer. I’ll tell him you called me a whore.”

His face lost its color.

“And I’ll tell him that the day my mother died,” I leaned forward slightly, “You told me to leave this house.”

“Gianna-”

“No,” I cut him off, “You wanted honesty, so let’s be honest.”

His mouth opened but he didn’t know what to say, his frown deepened.

“I know Raphael. You know he doesn’t trust you. You know he still carries his mother’s death with him every single day.”

Salvatore’s shoulders stiffened.

I didn’t stop, “And you know how protective he is of me,” my voice stayed frighteningly even, “So ask yourself something. If he hears your version and then he hears mine… If it came down to you standing on one side and me on the other, who do you think Raphael would choose to believe?”

Salvatore looked at me as though he were seeing me for the first time.

Shaking his head in disbelief, he leaned back in his chair, “I never wanted us to become enemies.”

I let out a breath, “We’re not but we’re not family either.”
