Chapter 671
He looked toward the cemetery for a brief moment before looking back at me.
“One day all of it was meant to become yours.”
I blinked.
“You were raised to understand this life,” he siniled faintly, “When Gio Junior was born. I listened to tradition My advisers. The old men who think a son must always inherit before a daughter,” his jaw flexed, “So named him my heir and that was my mistake.”
I couldn’t stop staring at him. This wasn’t the father I remembered leaving behind. The years had changed him It looked as though living without me had worn him down in ways no war ever could.
“He isn’t you.”
The words were blunt.
Matter-of-fact.
“The way you handled everything I threw at you. He isn’t strong like you. He doesn’t carry responsibility the way you did. I don’t need another son. I already have one. I want my brave little girl back.”
The cemetery disappeared.
I thought about Salvatore, about him sitting in my room, talking about Raphael, talking about children, talking about bloodlines about protecting his son.
Raphael deserved better.
Raphael deserved perfection.
Raphael deserved someone who wasn’t…
Me.
Salvatore had never said I wasn’t worth loving but somehow, that was all I’d heard.
Now my father sat beside me, looking at me as though losing me had been the greatest mistake of his life, not because of what I could give him, not because of my last name.
Because I was his daughter.
The thought hurt. It hurt because I wanted to believe him. More than anything. But somewhere along the way… I’d stopped believing good things about myself.
My lips trembled, “I…” the word broke apart before it could become a sentence, “I don’t know who I am anymore. I don’t think… I ever did.”
His grip around my hand tightened.
