Giovanni’s mouth curved into the faintest smile, “I’m not broken,” he looked the doctor straight in the eye, “You just ain’t smart enough to fix me yet.”

The door shut behind him and the sounds of Brooklyn rushed over him, cars, sirens, people shouting across the street, none of it reached him. His mind had latched onto one thing.

No cure.

Bullshit.

Doctors had been wrong before.

They were wrong now.

Somewhere in the world, there had to be a man smart enough. And if there wasn’t…

Then one day, Giovanni Toricelli would become powerful enough to find one.

No matter what it cost.

Age 22 | Manhattan, New York | Soldier (Made Man), rising earner

The banquet hall glowed beneath crystal chandeliers.

Long tables stretched from one end of the room to the other, covered in white linen and silver cutlery that cost more than most people earned in a month. Bottles of expensive Italian wine stood between towering flower arrangements while waiters moved quietly through the room, never speaking unless

spoken to.

Every chair was occupied with capos, soldiers. Associates who had earned the privilege of being invited, businessmen, politicians, judges who looked the other way often enough.

Giovanni walked through the room without slowing. By the age of twenty-two, he was already Made. Already earning more than men twice his age.

He had almost reached the bar when someone stepped into his path. The collision was light, barely enough to make him stop.

A woman’s voice snapped before he even looked up, “Watch where you’re going, idiot.”

Giovanni froze.

Idiot.

The word hit him before her face did, a muscle in his jaw twitched. Then he looked at her.

Green eyes.

They were not light green, not dark green, but something in between. The kind that looked straight through people instead of at them.

She couldn’t have been older than twenty.

Dark brown hair fell over one shoulder in loose waves. A deep emerald dress rested against her figure without looking flashy. She stood with her chin lifted, clearly expecting an apology.

Instead, Giovanni smiled.

The girl frowned, “Did you hear me?”

He nodded once, “I did.”

“And?”

“You called me an idiot.”

“I know what I called you,” she folded her arms, “You walked into me.”

“No, you walked into me,” he answered.

Her eyebrows shot upward, “Now you’re blaming me?” she stared at him another second before shaking her head, and mumbling “Fucking idiot.”

Then she stepped around him and disappeared into the crowd without another glance. Giovanni

watched her until she vanished between the tables.

Someone chuckled behind him, “Didn’t think I’d ever see that.”

Giovanni turned. Vito Costello leaned against one of the marble columns with a glass of whiskey in his

hand.

The Cosa Nostra’s chief enforcer looked amused, “You smile like that often?”

Giovanni ignored the question, “Who is she?”

Vito followed his gaze toward the crowd, “Ah. So that’s what this is. Her name’s Hazel Morino.”

The name meant nothing to him.

Vito took a slow sip of whiskey, “Her old man is Andrea Morino.”

Giovanni looked at him, “The Chicago Outfit’s consigliere?”

Vito nodded, “The same one.”

Giovanni looked back toward the ballroom but Hazel had already disappeared.

“You done admiring her ass?”

Giovanni finally looked back at him, “What do you want?”

Vito took another slow draw from his cigar before lowering his voice, “I found somebody.”

Giovanni frowned, “What are you talking about?”

“The doctor.”

Everything in Giovanni’s face changed. The warmth that had appeared only seconds ago disappeared as

if it had never existed.

“What doctor?”

“The one you’ve been asking every bastard about for the last four years.”
