Chapter 766
“Look at the first line.”
Gianna sniffled, her eyes were still wet, but she obeyed.
He waited, “So,” he said evenly, “read it.”
She stared at the page, her lips moved silently, trying and trying again.
“I…”
The word caught in her throat.
“I can’t…”
“You can.”
“I… the… letters…”
“They haven’t changed.”
He wrote something on the clipboard without looking at her.
“Attempt again.”
She swallowed hard and focused on the first word even though she could barely hold her head up, “I…”
Dr. Crowe reached toward the control panel beside him.
“I can’t read it,” she whispered, panic creeping into her voice. “Please…”
A sharp tone echoed through the room. Gianna’s whole body jerked violently against the chair. Her back arched. A cry tore out of her before she could stop it..The restraints snapped tight around her wrists as every muscle locked
at once.
This time, I looked away, I stood up and turned my attention to the wall, breathing heavily.
Then it stopped, she sucked in a desperate breath and I looked back, tears spilled freely down her cheeks now.
Dr. Crowe looked at the monitor displaying her brain activity, “Read the first line.”
She shook her head rapidly, “I… I can’t…”
Another shock. Her small body convulsed against the restraints. A broken sob escaped her lips as the current released. She bent forward as much as the straps allowed, fighting to catch her breath.
“I’ll try,” she gasped. “I’ll try…”
“Then read.”
She forced herself to look at the page again, the tears blurred her vision. She blinked them away as fast as she could, “T…The…”
She stumbled over the next word, the letters seemed to trap her. She squeezed her eyes shut for a second, “I can’t…
The tone sounded again, this time the shock lasted longer. A scream ripped through the room.

My hand shot to the keyboard, slamming the space bar. The video froze, but the sound had already carved its way into my skull. I turned my head away from the monitor and clamped both hands over my ears.
It didn’t matter.
I could still hear her.
My breathing turned slow and heavy as I stared at the opposite wall, my jaw locked so tightly it burned. Severa long seconds passed before I looked back. The recording was still paused.
Gianna’s small body was arched against the restraints, every muscle pulled tight, her mouth frozen open in a silent scream.
I swallowed hard.
Then I forced my shaking hand back onto the mouse and pressed play.
When it ended, her head hung forward..She was crying openly now, just the helpless, exhausted sobs of a little girl whose body had reached its limit.
“I’ll do better,” she cried, “Please… I’ll do better…”
Dr. Crowe calmly adjusted one of the sensors on her temple, “The subject continues associating failure with corrective stimulation. Crying persists. Compliance remains acceptable as anticipated.”
He spoke as though she wasn’t even in the room. As though the child trembling in front of him was no different from numbers on a chart.
Gianna tried to wipe her face against her shoulder. She couldn’t reach. Her wrists were still strapped down.
“I don’t want to be broken anymore,” she whispered through her sobs. “I’m trying…”
I couldn’t watch another second.
I threw my head back and squeezed my eyes shut, “Fuck…” I muttered, “Fuck, fuck, fuck!” the word echoed through the office as my hand curled into a fist, “I’m going to bury every last one of them.”
The promise settled in my chest like stone but before Giovanni Torricelli paid…
The Council would.
The same men who had looked the other way. The same men who had handed an innocent little girl over to monsters and called it acceptable because she was his blood.
They would kneel before the Capones.
They would strip Torricelli of every protection they had ever given him.
Every alliance.
Every favor.
Every ounce of influence.
They would cast him out and leave him standing alone.
And once they did…
I’d make sure there was nothing left for him to stand on.
