Chapter 805

Years of fear came out in one breath.
Every scream, every tear, every night I had woken up remembering his machines, every time I’d wondered what I had done to deserve it.
I swung again, drove my knee forward. He stumbled backward. The metal collar around his neck caught the light.
For the first time, I noticed the chain attached to it. It was secured to a restraint point in the wall. He couldn’t move far.
My eyes locked onto it, he saw me looking.
His expression changed, “Gianna.”
“You told me I was worthless,” my eyes filled again, “You hurt me because you said you were trying to fix me and you knew. You knew there was nothing to fix,” my stomach turned, “You fucking knew!”
I lunged again. This time he caught both my arms. We struggled. His grip was stronger than I expected, and he twisted my wrist hard enough to make the letter opener slip in my hand.
It hit the floor, and I kicked at his shin. He cursed and loosened his grip. I ripped one arm free and shoved him backward. His head struck the wall, and I grabbed the letter opener again.
He went still for half a second, then he looked at me and I saw the old Vance.
The man from my childhood.
The man who had watched me suffer without blinking.
His face hardened, “You always were the most difficult, you fucking spoiled cunt.”
My blood ran cold and before I knew it, I grabbed the front of his shirt and shoved him against the wall, Vance’s hand came up at the same time, he struck me.
My head snapped sideways, the old pain returned instantly but something was different this time.
I didn’t freeze.
I turned my face back toward him slowly. I stared at him, he stared back and then I smiled. There was nothing funny about any of this. Maybe that was why I smiled.
The old me would’ve been crying.
The old me would’ve been begging.
The old me would’ve been looking for the nearest door, praying someone would come through it.
She wasn’t here anymore.
Whatever had been left of that little girl had been buried under years of pain, fear, rage, grief and things I didn’t even know how to name. My heart was pounding, but I didn’t feel afraid. I felt something else, something darker, something that had been waiting inside me for years.
“I went through every fucking thing you did to me. Every session. Every needle. Every time you hurt me and called it treatment.”

A broken laugh slipped through my tears.
“And for what?” I shook my head slowly, “Nothing. You tortured me for nothing. You hurt those children for nothing. You watched us suffer for years, knowing exactly what you were doing.”
My laugh carne again, louder this time, almost unsteady.
“But maybe I was wrong.”
Vance’s eyes narrowed.
“Maybe it wasn’t for nothing after all. It didn’t cure me but it did do something else.”
I took a slow breath, my chest rising and falling too fast as I pulled him harder against the wall.
“Whatever was wrong with me before you put me in that chair…” I looked straight into his eyes. “You fed it. You pushed it. You buried it under years of pain until there was almost nothing left except rage. So congratulations, Doctor.”
I tilted my head, tears still slipping down my face.
“You didn’t fix me. You helped make me fucking crazy. And you shouldn’t have done that. Because now you finally get to meet the part of me you helped create.”
My hand moved before he could react. I drove the letter opener into his abdomen.
Vance’s breath caught.
His eyes widened.
