Naomi shot him a glare.
"Mr. Xavier, why are you standing here trying to drive us apart?"
Xavier didn't say anything else.
He only looked at her, his gaze seeming to pass straight through her, as if he were looking at something beyond her.
Something in Naomi's chest tightened for no reason at all.
The edge she had held against him faded, and she said, "Mr. Xavier, do you know how badly my brother suffered?" That line about being in hell had left her deeply unsettled.
Xavier said, "Looking at it now, I'd say it was still bearable."
The truth was, with Fiona in his life, Soren had never fallen that far.
From the moment she saved him, there had already been something in his heart to hold on to, so he had never truly dropped into hell.
What had affected Xavier more was Naomi's attitude, and Penelope's.

"I'm the one who had Tristan brought back to Jexburgh," Penelope said only after she and Soren reached Radiant Lodge.
Soren was silent for a moment.
Then he said, "I naturally recognized the people at Mother Consort's side." It was his way of telling Penelope that he had known about it long ago, and that if he hadn't allowed it, Tristan would never have made it back to Jexburgh.
And the reason she had sent the Shadow Guard from her own side was simple.
If she had sent anyone else, they might not have been able to bring Tristan back at all.
"I sent people because I knew that if you saw my people, you'd let them pass. And I brought him back because I was afraid that in a moment of impulse, you'd execute him," Penelope said.
"In your position, Mother Consort naturally has to think of the Zonfrillo Estate," he said lightly.
"You think everything I did was for the Zonfrillo Estate?" Penelope gave a bitter smile. "Mother Consort was worried about you. By then, I'd already learned your life wasn't in danger. I was afraid you'd act on impulse and damage your future. Once this storm passes, and once your own power is more secure, however you want to deal with him, Mother Consort will applaud it."
Her Soren could die for the Zonfrillo Estate.
But he could not be killed by someone inside it.
Penelope said, "If you had died by his hand, Mother Consort would have made him follow you into the grave no matter what. I also know it's too late to say this to you now. You may not believe me."
After being hunted by family like that, a man faced his relatives' words and heard only a blur of truth and lies.
At that point, his heart would have gone numb. Of course he wouldn't believe any of it. Otherwise, who could guarantee there wouldn't be another assassination waiting? Someone who had already died once was always more watchful.
If it were Penelope herself, she would have taken this as nothing more than a tactic to curry favor now that he had come back alive.
In court and inside the home, there were too many cases of people bending whichever way the wind blew.
Which one of them didn't put on a face of complete sincerity?
Soren's gaze flickered.
Then he said, "It's not too late."
There were still people in this world Soren could trust.
So he was not as Penelope imagined, with a heart already numbed beyond reach.
