The drive back was utterly silent.
The atmosphere inside the car was thick and heavy.
When they finally pulled up to the hotel entrance, Claire hastily muttered a "thank you." Just as her hand grasped the door handle to escape...
The electronic locks clicked shut.
Claire froze, whipping her head around to look at him in confusion.
Wilbur stared straight ahead, his tone dangerously casual. "How's the divorce going?"
Just hearing the word gave Claire a migraine.
Felix was completely refusing to cooperate with her lawyer, Coley. It perfectly proved the old saying.
If a man doesn't want a divorce, making it happen is absolute hell.
She had already braced herself for a brutal two-year legal war.
She just hadn't expected Wilbur to bring it up.
"Not great," Claire admitted, frustration bleeding into her voice.
Wilbur's grip on the leather steering wheel tightened, his dark eyes swirling with a violent storm.
But the car was too dim, and Claire missed the shift entirely.
She let out a dramatic yawn. "It's late. You should get some sleep. Bye."
Wilbur paused for a beat. "Goodnight."
He said goodnight.
Not goodbye.
But Claire was too exhausted to notice the distinction. The second the locks clicked open, she scrambled out of the car, offering a quick wave before bolting into the lobby without looking back.
After a hot shower, her exhaustion had mostly evaporated.
Wilbur's question had dragged all her anxiety back to the surface.
Wide awake at 2 AM, she texted Coley, demanding another update.
Unfortunately, it was late, and Coley was definitely asleep. No reply.
Claire tossed and turned for half the night, finally managing to drift off right as the sun started to rise.
Only to be violently jolted awake by her phone ringing.
Even if she wasn't prone to morning rage, being woken up after an entire night of insomnia was a guaranteed recipe for a meltdown.
And the news about Felix stalling only made it worse.
Usually, Noreen picked up on the first ring, but this time it took a suspiciously long time.
When she finally answered, her voice was a hushed whisper.
"What are you doing?" Claire demanded, squinting suspiciously. "Why are you sneaking around?"
"...I'm in a meeting."
Claire checked the clock. "Who the hell schedules a meeting at 7:30 in the morning?"
Noreen fell silent.
She had forgotten to check the time.
Rather than try to explain, she deflected. "Why are you calling me this early? Insomnia?"
"You're a psychic."
"Normally you're dead to the world at this hour."
"It's all because of that bastard Felix..." Claire launched into a passionate rant.
As she finally wound down, she made sure to give Noreen a stern warning. "Listen to me, honey. Men are garbage. When you're constantly chasing them, they treat you like dirt. But the second you let go, they lose their minds. There's no logic to it; it's purely just bruised ego. Do not let them mess with your head."
Noreen, whose head was currently extremely messed with, stayed silent.
