Nine C-Section, Nine Dead Sons, One Escape novel Chapter 36

Chapter 4

They went at it until late. Morning light showed everything, clothes everywhere, wrappers, the works.

My favorite sheets. Wrinkled. Stained.

The housekeeper stood in the doorway, awkward, not knowing where to look.

I glanced. Felt nothing.

“Throw it all out.”

Tiffany was feeding Jon milk, marks on her neck. “Sorry about the mess, Evie.”

I kept tending my plants on the balcony. Didn’t answer.

Before, every time he brought someone home, I’d be sick for hours.

Now? Nothing. It was almost… freeing.

Jon didn’t like my silence. He tried again, almost pouty. “That pendant I gave you. Where is it?”

My hands paused on the plant.

Just for a second.

I put down the shears, got the box. Opened it.

Inside, a jade pendant. Phoenix design.

He’d given it to me when we first got together. “Family heirloom, Evie. For Hartwell wives.”

I’d treasured it for ten years. Kept it perfect.

Now I put it in Tiffany’s hands.

“Jon’s right. This suits you.”

His face went dark. He crushed his glass without meaning to.

“What’s your game, Evelyn?”

I didn’t get it. He was impossible to please.

There was this girl once, someone he kept for three months. He asked me for one of my orchids, for her.

I lost it. Shredded every flower in sight. Made a scene.

She cried. He screamed at me in front of everyone.

“Why do you have to be so petty, Evelyn?! It’s just a plant!”
