Peter's words made something in York snap.
He stumbled to his feet, drunk and unstable, and pointed at Peter. "Then you tell me, what is love?"
"Peter, I'm telling you," York shouted, his eyes red and frantic, "there's no such thing as true love in this world!"
Peter wasn't surprised by York's reaction. He had been molded since childhood by his father and grandfather, steeped in a family culture that gave him all the strengths of a top-tier heir. He could navigate the business world with ease, holding the keys to power and wealth, capable of standing at the pinnacle of the pyramid and commanding the respect of all. But when it came to family, marriage, and personal emotions, he was a complete failure.
York swayed in front of Peter, his eyes bloodshot. "There's no such thing as selfless, unconditional love in this world! What you all call 'love' is just a transactional relationship where each person gets what they need!"
Peter, still seated, watched the unhinged York and said, "Your feelings for Ann James and her son were unconditional."
"Ann saved my life!" York countered. "Shouldn't I have been good to her?"
"But your kindness to her crossed the line between a man and a woman, and it destroyed your wife and your marriage!"
York felt like he was going insane.
"Yes!"
York was in a state of utter frenzy, his eyes a frightening shade of red. "I favored Ann and used tactics against Claudia! I'm guilty as sin!"
He staggered backward. "But Claudia and I knew each other for over twenty years! Was I never good to her at all?"
As he recalled the past, his heart twisted in agony. "Ever since we were kids, whatever she wanted, even if I didn't buy it right away, I'd get it for her later. She said she wanted to go shopping, and no matter how tired I was, I'd go with her because I was afraid she'd stay out too late and something would happen. She mentioned once that no one was there to pick her up in the rain, so I ran through three streets with my shoes full of water just to carry her home. When the Watkins family went bankrupt, everyone turned their backs on them. My grandfather had my accounts monitored twenty-four-seven, but to help them pay off their debts, I risked misappropriating funds from Ferguson Group. To marry her, to give her a home, I knelt in my grandfather's study for a day and a night and took twenty lashes from his whip! Does she know any of that? She said she didn't want to leave Capital City, that she wanted to be near her parents, so I canceled our plans to move abroad. Who was I supposed to tell about the pressure and control I faced from my grandfather and father every single day? After she married me, did I ever let her worry about a single thing, big or small? My schemes against her were just to make her listen and stay by my side! Why does everyone have to read so much into it? I never wanted her to lose! I swore I would be her rock for life! I never, ever thought about divorce!"
