York was in a bad way, but he flat-out refused to go to the hospital. Darleen, at her wit's end, finally threatened to call their mother, Wendy.
That got his attention. He reluctantly agreed to go to the hospital the next morning.
After getting her brother home, Darleen had the family doctor come over to check on him and start an IV drip. She then insisted on staying by his side all night.
The next morning, Darleen issued her final threat: either he went to the hospital, or she was calling their mother. Between the threats and her pleading, York finally caved and agreed to go for a more thorough examination.
On the way, Darleen pulled over to grab some breakfast.
To her surprise, York got out of the car himself and ordered a black coffee with no sugar and a bacon, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel.
Darleen couldn't help but stare at her brother.
Black coffee, no sugar. A special love for a bacon, egg, and cheese on an everything bagel. That was Claudia’s order.
They arrived at the hospital.
Darleen went to find her brother's primary care physician.
She glanced at the breakfast in her brother's hand. "Here, York, I can take that to her."
York clutched the bag tighter. "She's probably not in yet. I'll just drop it off at her office and leave."
Darleen hesitated for a moment but didn't press the issue.
About ten minutes later, York knocked on the door of Claudia's office and found that she was already there.
He stood in the doorway, she stood by her desk, and for a silent second, their eyes met.
Claudia glanced at the time on her phone and asked coolly, "Did the Ferguson Group go bankrupt? Is that why Mr. Ferguson isn't at work?"
York stepped into the office and placed the breakfast on her desk.
As he did, his gaze fell upon another breakfast already sitting there.
Claudia glanced at the bag York had brought. "Keep it for yourself," she said dismissively. "I have work to do. I'll see you out."
York had coughed up a mouthful of blood.
Her medical instincts took over. Claudia dropped the breakfast she was holding and rushed to support him. "What's wrong?"
York braced himself with one hand on the desk and used the other to grip Claudia's arm.
His eyes were red as he asked in a choked voice, "Claudia... you do still care about me, don't you?"
They were inches apart, their eyes locked. "York, I'm a doctor," Claudia said evenly. "This is a hospital. I'm not going to stand by and let someone die."
"I don't believe you!" he cried, shaking his head desperately.
Claudia pulled her arm away. "York, if my doing this is giving you the wrong idea, then I can just as easily pretend I never saw anything."
She turned away again, and this time, York lost control completely, wrapping his arms around her from behind.
His voice was a raw, agonized whisper. "Claudia, we've known each other for over twenty years. We were married for three. Don't tell me that in your heart, I mean less to you than Hugh, a man you've only known for a few months!"
