As soon as the call ended, Wendy began pressuring York to go see Claudia.
Wendy and York sat facing each other on the sofa in the office's rest area.
"York, you heard her," Wendy said. "All you have to do is make an appointment, and Claudia will give you the best care."
York kept his head down, his voice calm. "Mom, I have my own doctor. I don't need to see her."
He had promised Claudia he wouldn't approach her again. In her heart, he knew that even if he were to die right now, she wouldn't shed another tear for him.
Wendy shot to her feet, her tone growing agitated. "York, I'm not discussing this with you!"
She continued, "I pleaded with you to cherish her, but you turned a deaf ear, and it all ended in divorce. Son, not every mistake can be fixed!"
York's eyes reddened, and he nodded forcefully. "I know, Mom."
Tears welled in Wendy's eyes, her heart aching for him.
"I know you can't let her go," she said. "You blame yourself, you feel guilty, you regret everything, and you want to win her back. But you don't have that chance anymore. You've already cost her so much. Isn't letting her go and wishing her happiness the right thing to do?"
York nodded again, this time in agony. "It is," he choked out.
He knew all too well that he'd never have another chance. He knew the best thing he could do was let go. He forced himself not to bother her, not to get close to her. But he couldn't stop his own heart. He would think of her, of their youth, of their marriage, and of their separate futures. It would break him, fill him with a pain he couldn't control.
Wendy pleaded with him, "York, Darleen is more capable than most girls, but if something were to happen to you, she couldn't support the weight of the Ferguson family on her own. If you fall, the entire family falls with you!"
Claudia had come to the club to pick up Rock Sayer and ran into the last person on earth she ever wanted to see.
Mayes Shaw.
One of the heirs to the Grandeur Group, the fourth grandson of the Shaw family, and Celia's half-brother. The same Mayes who had obsessively pursued Claudia in college. After she rejected him, he paid off one of her classmates to drug her. York had arrived just in time to save her. He had beaten Mayes half to death and permanently disabled one of his arms on the spot. Mayes was rushed to the hospital, where an amputation saved his life.
After his discharge, Old Mrs. Shaw had sent him abroad in a fit of rage. Claudia hadn't seen him in years and was shocked to find he had returned.
Mayes was handsome and fashionably dressed, the very picture of a spoiled, good-for-nothing heir. They were in a narrow hallway, about to cross paths. Claudia turned to walk away.
A flirtatious whistle cut through the air. At Mayes's signal, his gang of cronies moved to block Claudia's path.
