"I'm going to kill that bastard!"
"Alright, we'll kill him!"
…
In the heat of the moment, her emotions out of control, she had hurled that threat. And York, it seemed, had agreed.
Claudia's heart leaped into her throat, her mind a tangled mess. She looked at Hugh with cautious eyes. "How did Mayes die?"
Hugh knelt by her bed, his tall frame close. "Shortly after Mayes was moved to a hospital room, Mr. Ferguson and Mr. Cyrus went in to 'visit' him, one after the other. About half an hour after they both left, the hospital announced that Mayes's condition had deteriorated and he had died despite resuscitation efforts."
Claudia lowered her gaze, hiding the panic and fear in her eyes. She was resolute about not going back to York, but she didn't want him to be in trouble either.
Hugh's voice was gentle yet firm. "Even if your suspicions are correct, I will do everything in my power to handle this. You don't need to worry too much."
Looking at Hugh, Claudia was at a loss for words.
After he left, Claudia immediately called Cyrus. She could hear the clatter of mahjong tiles in the background. Cyrus told her not to worry, that his car was fully insured, and he had been driving normally at the time of the accident. He added that Mayes had pre-existing health problems and simply wasn't strong enough to pull through—it had nothing to do with anyone else.
After hanging up, Claudia tried to reassure herself, but she couldn't calm down. She paced her room until the early hours of the morning, phone still clutched in her hand.
At the same time, in the Ferguson Mansion.
The atmosphere in Old Mr. Ferguson's study was exceptionally tense. Old Mr. Ferguson and Sewell stood before the desk, their faces grim.
Sewell pointed a finger at York, scolding him. "You are the heir to the Ferguson family. You carry the entire Ferguson Group on your shoulders. You are the future of this family! To risk everything like that for a woman—what were you thinking?"
Mayes's brother, Gabriel, retorted, "Grandma, how can you side with an outsider? Even if Mr. Cyrus hitting him was an accident, how do you explain York going into his room late at night?"
"Mr. Cyrus called just now to explain," Old Mrs. Shaw said. "He and Mr. Ferguson went to the room to discuss compensation."
It was an explanation the Shaws were unlikely to believe.
Mayes's father, who had been silent until now, slowly rose from the sofa. He looked around at everyone in the Shaw family, his expression grave. "That bastard brought this on himself. You can't blame anyone else. Sign the papers for cremation tomorrow. There's no need to notify friends and relatives."
Mayes's mother collapsed onto the floor, wailing, "My perfectly healthy son is gone, just like that! I can't accept this!"
Mayes's three older brothers also objected. "Cyrus and York bullied our brother, which is the same as bullying the entire Shaw family. We can't just let this go!"
