Claudia stared intently at Gideon's face, her mind slow to process his words.
She was silent for a full minute.
Then, she suddenly laughed. "How is that possible?"
Gideon’s expression remained exceptionally grave. "The Ferguson family is still at the hospital. Do you want to go to the morgue to see him one last time?"
Their eyes met for a moment before Claudia abruptly turned away.
With her back to Gideon, she ran a hand through her hair and glanced around her familiar office.
She picked up her bag, took a deep breath, and turned back around.
"Gideon," she said, "I'd like to take two days off."
Gideon nodded.
Claudia walked out of the office with unsteady steps.
Gideon, concerned, followed her to the door. "I'll drive you home. You need to get some rest."
Claudia was silent the entire ride. Gideon didn't try to speak either.
When they arrived at her house, Claudia got out and practically ran to her front door, forgetting to even say goodbye to Gideon.
She pushed open the gate and entered her yard.
Felix and Jessica, who were trimming the plants, looked up in surprise at her sudden return.
Felix put down the flowerpot he was holding. "Didn't you have a consultation this morning? Why are you back so early?"
Claudia clutched her bag, her eyelashes fluttering violently.
Jessica noticed something was wrong with her daughter, set down her shears, and took off her gloves.
She reached for Claudia's hand and found it clenched tight, trembling slightly.
"Claudia, did something happen?" Jessica asked, her voice laced with worry.
Claudia looked at her parents, managing a weak, tight-lipped smile but unable to make a sound.
Her parents grew anxious.
The others looked at each other, sighing. No one could have imagined that Claudia’s twenty-seventh birthday would become the day York died.
Inside her room, Claudia stood by the door, having changed into a long white dress.
Listening to the conversation outside, she lowered her gaze, hiding the emotion in her eyes.
The first time York had lied to her was when he said he was on a business trip for a month, but was actually taking care of Ann.
The second time he had lied to her was on Thanksgiving, when he told her he wasn't sick.
Claudia quietly opened the door.
"It's too stuffy in here," she said to everyone, her tone unnervingly calm. "I'm going for a walk."
They all looked at each other, and though they were worried, no one tried to stop her.
As Claudia left the living room, Jessica quickly turned to her son. "It's cold outside, Eddy. Grab a coat and follow your sister."
Rock grabbed a thin blanket from the sofa, tucked it under his arm, and pulled Eddy out the door.
