Visibly, York’s brow furrowed in a tight knot.
Claudia stood up, her expression cold.
Lying on the sofa, York’s hand shot out and grabbed her wrist.
Claudia looked down at him, her gaze piercing. She yanked her hand free. “Done with the act?”
York’s dark eyes searched her face as he cautiously sat up.
He stood before her and mumbled, “I really did drink too much.”
With a look that saw through everything, she asked, “Tell me, whose idea was this?”
They looked at each other. York lowered his head and muttered one word: “Peter.”
With that single word, he had not only sold himself out but Peter as well.
Claudia couldn’t help but let out a short, mocking laugh.
It seemed York had left his intelligence behind in his past life.
Patting his shoulder, she said, “You just wait here. I’m going to the restroom, and then I’ll take you home.”
York couldn’t quite believe it. She wasn’t angry, nor did she seem to mind his little trick.
Once out of the room, Claudia walked straight out of the club, hailed a cab, and went home.
On the way, she even remembered to pick up some late-night snacks for her parents and brother.
Next Monday, she would start her internship at the Harvest family’s private hospital on the west side of the city.
She didn’t want the tragedies of her past life to repeat themselves.
Not for herself, and not for York.
She hoped they could both live well, separately.
She wanted to be a happy, dramatic girl, not live a life of misery.
She would work hard, earn her own money, love herself, and love her family.
With a weary expression, York denied it. “Mom, don’t make wild guesses. It’s not like that.”
Wendy snorted, her eyes flashing a warning. “I bet you’ve been scheming to force Claudia to call off the wedding so you can conveniently marry Ann at the end of the month!”
“If I have to get married in this life,” York blurted out, “the person I will marry is Claudia!”
Evading his mother’s questioning, York left Ferguson Mansion as quickly as he could.
Wendy stood at the foot of the stairs, watching her son’s retreating figure with a flicker of worry in her eyes.
She knew perfectly well how much Claudia had loved her son all these years.
Likewise, she knew even better how her son had treated Claudia.
She had been surprised when he first announced his intention to marry Claudia. But now, she was even more surprised that Claudia had backed out right before getting the license.
After some thought, Wendy instructed Butler Palmer to prepare a gift. She was going to pay a visit to the Watkins family herself.
It was just past nine in the morning when Wendy arrived at the Watkins residence.
