Peter laughed awkwardly. "Damn, Claudia', you've got a vicious tongue."
Claudia's expression turned cold. "Well, you're the ones who lied to me."
His cover blown, Peter dropped the act.
He asked Claudia, "You've been chasing York for so many years, and you were finally about to get him. Why the sudden change of heart?"
Claudia said with a straight face, "I just had a sudden realization. My feelings for York are purely platonic, like a sister for a brother."
"Who are you trying to fool?" Peter's skepticism was written all over his face. "We all know how you feel about York. 'Like a brother'? I'm surprised you can say that without blushing."
Claudia pouted. "I'm done being the girl who chases after him. I've had an epiphany, okay?"
They stared at each other.
Claudia's expression was unshakably firm.
Peter realized this was serious.
After Peter left, Claudia continued her search for an apartment.
Her mother's green jadeite set had been appraised and valued by the auction house, and the auction process had begun. She would have the money soon.
As soon as the money came through, she would pay back everything she owed York.
But before the end of the month, she had to rent a place and move her parents and brother out of York's house.
Toward evening, Claudia finally found a three-bedroom rental near the hospital on the west side of town.
Before she could put down a deposit, she got a call from her younger brother, Eddy.
Eddy said he had broken something of someone's and they were demanding compensation. He gave her an address and then hung up abruptly.
Claudia checked the location Eddy had sent her: The Ferguson family's private airfield?
Something felt wrong. She quickly tried calling Eddy back, but no one answered.
Eddy was only fourteen now. He idolized York and listened to him more than anyone.
Peter shot York a look. "Who do you think? He was here to help you."
York frowned. "Help me?"
"Look, don't worry about it," Peter urged, pushing York toward the helicopter. "Claudia is on her way. Get on board and wait for her."
If he hadn't asked Eddy for help, there was no way in hell he could have gotten Claudia to the Ferguson airfield.
Claudia got out of the taxi and ran into the airfield.
She scanned the area but didn't see Eddy. She did, however, see Peter.
Since she couldn't reach her brother, she had no choice but to ask Peter. "Peter, have you seen my brother?"
Peter sighed, his expression grave as he pointed toward the helicopter's cabin door.
Claudia's eyes filled with suspicion. "Why would Eddy be on York's helicopter?"
Peter feigned innocence. "I just got here myself. Why don't you go up and see for yourself?"
