They left the club one after the other, just in time to see Claudia sending two of her friends off in a car.
York pushed past Peter and walked over to Claudia, smelling the alcohol on her. "You've been drinking. It's not safe. I'll get a cab and take you home."
Claudia glanced back at York, then at Peter.
Peter felt that something was seriously off with York tonight.
He pulled Claudia aside and whispered in her ear, "I'll take you home. There's something I need to talk to you about anyway."
Claudia cleared her throat and said to York, "You go on ahead, York. I'll have Peter take me home."
Watching them whisper to each other again before getting into a taxi, York's face darkened.
It was nearly dawn when Peter emerged from the elevator, humming a tune.
He was startled to see York standing at his door in dark pajamas, staring blankly ahead. It nearly gave him a heart attack.
Clutching his chest, Peter asked, "What are you doing standing at my door in the middle of the night? Are you crazy?"
York replied, "Couldn't sleep. Thought we could have a drink."
Peter opened the door, and the two went inside, one after the other.
Peter grabbed a bottle of liquor and brought it to the living room. "The wedding's off, so why did you still move in here?"
York stood in the living room, his deep eyes scanning every corner like a radar.
Peter's suspicion grew the longer he looked at York. "What, are you here to hunt ghosts?"
The two men locked eyes before York walked over and sat down on the sofa.
Taking the glass from Peter, York said out of the blue, "I'm thinking of sending Darleen abroad to study for a few years. What do you think?"
Peter’s immediate reaction was, "She's doing just fine at Capital University. Why the sudden talk of sending her abroad?"
York looked up at Peter. "My aunt wants to introduce her to a nice young man. If Darleen goes there to study, they'll have a chance to get to know each other."
Peter felt like he'd just seen a ghost.
Leaving Peter's apartment, York felt a sense of relief wash over him.
If it wasn't Peter, then who could 'that person' be?
Claudia certainly had a wide social circle, but she was just a recent college graduate in her early twenties.
She'd recently sold her jewelry and then easily landed a job at the Harvest family's private hospital—all with Gideon's help from behind the scenes.
A very, very good person?
Hasn't confessed yet?
Can't reveal his identity?
Could it be Gideon?
