Claudia was speechless.

The lunch was a tense affair, with each of them harboring their own ulterior motives.

As they left the restaurant, Claudia pointed across the street. "You go on ahead. I can just walk back."

York gestured across the street as well. "My car is parked at the hospital. Let's walk back together."

Claudia pouted but began walking towards the hospital with York.

In the parking lot in front of the outpatient building, York stopped. "Claudia, get in my car for a minute. I have something to tell you."

Claudia was getting impatient. "I have to clock in soon. If you have something to say, say it now. Otherwise, I'm leaving."

She had a gut feeling that something was off about York today. He was acting like he was possessed.

York’s towering gaze locked onto her face. "I bought back that jewelry set you auctioned off. It's in the trunk of my car."

Claudia was both surprised and shocked. "I've already paid you back the money. Why did you buy the jewelry back?"

"To give it back to you," York said.

"I don't want it!" Claudia blurted out.

She wasn't about to get burned twice.

Claudia said, "Since you paid for it, it's yours now. When I've earned enough money, I'll buy it back from you. Just don't jack up the price."

York stared at Claudia with a complicated expression. "I'll keep the jewelry safe for you for now. You can ask me for it whenever you want."

They looked at each other.

Claudia scoffed internally. A set of jewelry versus her own life—she knew her priorities.

Since Claudia refused to take back the jewelry, York didn't insist.

Gideon looked puzzled. "Mr. Ferguson, didn't you and Claudia call off the engagement?"

York corrected him, "We didn't call it off. We postponed the wedding."

Gideon nodded in understanding.

When Claudia emerged from the elevator, York walked over to meet her.

Claudia glanced at Gideon's retreating back and asked York, "What were you two just talking about?"

York held up the tote bag. "My mom made you some dried fruits and vegetables. I just happened to run into Mr. Gideon and asked if he wanted to try some."

Claudia led York to the break room. "Gideon didn't mean to be rude. He just never eats snacks."

York unconsciously tightened his grip on the bag. "You seem to know him very well."

"Of course," Claudia replied without hesitation.
