York's face was terrifyingly dark, and he radiated a dangerous, keep-your-distance aura. His sharp gaze locked onto Ann’s reaction.
"Before I answer your question," he said, "you answer one for me. How did you know the exact time and place to find me here?"
Ann’s expression faltered for a moment before she quickly lowered her head, looking guilty. "York, can’t we just talk about this in private?" she pleaded through her tears.
What was going on? Why was this different from what her brother and sister-in-law had told her? Why was York being so cold to her?
York suddenly exploded. "Security! Get this woman out of here!"
At his words, another wave of murmurs swept the room.
"Looks like Mr. Ferguson doesn't know her that well after all."
"How ridiculous. Plenty of heiresses are after Mr. Ferguson. Where does someone like her get the nerve?"
"Even though the Watkins family went bankrupt, Claudia was still raised in high society. She's got the looks, the figure... This woman is so plain. It's a miracle she even knows Mr. Ferguson."
...
The chatter continued, and Ann, her face pale, twisted her hands in front of her, looking utterly wronged. Two staff members approached to escort her out.
Ann dodged them and suddenly ran to Wendy. Crying, she grasped Wendy's hand. "Auntie, I know Grandpa Ferguson looked down on my family’s poverty and thought I wasn't good enough for York. I only came back to catch up with him, I have no other intentions. Can you please just let me have a few words with him alone?"
The crowd had a collective moment of understanding. "So she’s the one who saved Mr. Ferguson’s life."
Ann met Wendy’s gaze but wilted after only a second. Seeing that Ann was about to be completely shut down by Wendy, Claudia secretly gave Rae Blake a look.
Rae understood immediately and stepped in to smooth things over. "Mrs. Ferguson, if she saved Mr. Ferguson's life, then she’s practically family. Today is Claudia and Mr. Ferguson's birthday, and all guests are welcome. Why don't you stay for a piece of cake?"
As soon as Rae Blake finished speaking, Ann turned back to York. Tears streamed down her face. "York, when I saved you without a thought for my own life, I never intended to hold it over you. You know that."
She spoke quickly, a note of desperation in her voice.
York glanced at Claudia, then turned his impassive face to Ann. "If you say you never intended to hold it over me, then how do you explain taking sixty million from my grandfather behind my back?"
