Ann was led away in a police car in front of everyone, leaving a trail of buzzing speculation in her wake.
Selene was mortified and furious. She turned to Mrs. Quinn. "I'm so sorry for everything tonight, Mrs. Quinn. It's all my fault. I'll bring my niece to apologize to you personally another day. I have to go now."
Selene then left in humiliation.
Mrs. Quinn followed her out moments later. She pulled out her phone and made a call. "Brother, I need you to have someone look into Hamlin Quinn. He suddenly gave up that plot of land in the east district to the Ferguson family!"
Darleen watched Mrs. Quinn hang up, her arms crossed. She strolled over casually.
Mrs. Quinn's expression was hostile. "Selene and I have been best friends for over a decade. You can't ruin that with just a few words."
Darleen threw her hands up. "What do I have to do with you? Do you really think I have nothing better to do than meddle in your friendship?"
Mrs. Quinn's face darkened. "Miss Ferguson, I know your brother and Selene's niece had a history and some misunderstandings. But your feud has nothing to do with me. Don't think you can use me as a pawn against Selene and her niece."
Darleen was losing patience with the woman's stupidity. She gave Mrs. Quinn a disdainful once-over. "Out of respect for my long friendship with your daughter, let me give you a little tip. Apartment 501, 3 Grand City Plaza. The next time Mr. Quinn says he's on a business trip or out for a client dinner, you might want to take a little trip over there. You might find a surprise."
Watching Mrs. Quinn hurry away in a daze, Darleen quickly called her brother. "York, I did what you said. I told Mrs. Quinn everything."
After hanging up, she excitedly called Claudia. Hearing that Ann was back in police custody, Claudia was overjoyed.
"Claudia, I need to go celebrate somewhere," Darleen said. "Let's have a long-distance toast."
Darleen dragged Peter to a restaurant and opened a bottle of wine.
An hour later, they emerged from the restaurant. Peter hadn't touched a drop, but Darleen was swaying on her feet.
With a sudden yank, Darleen pulled him down, then climbed onto his lap. Her mind was a fuzzy mess. "Peter, why are they so loud when they kiss? Does it feel good or bad?"
Peter felt like he was about to die. "Get off me right now!"
Darleen giggled. "Let me try."
With the last shred of his sanity, Peter pushed her off him. He grabbed her bag and was about to stand up when she climbed on top of him again.
He fell back onto the recliner with Darleen pinning him down, making a last, desperate struggle. "Darleen, listen to me! I might be a little older, but I'm a respectable, untouched gentleman! If you lay a hand on me, you have to take responsibility!"
Darleen, high on alcohol, tilted his chin up. "Peter, you dare to bargain with me?"
