The waiter took the menu. "Miss, the juice here is free. Would you prefer fresh-squeezed or chilled? And what flavor?"
Ann's hand, hidden at her side, clenched into a tight fist. "Neither, thank you. Just a glass of water will be fine."
This old woman had done nothing more than invite her here, yet she had already managed to humiliate her so thoroughly.
Clearly, the rumors about York’s mother being soft were wrong.
After the waiter brought the water and left, Ann spoke. "Ma'am, is there something you wanted to see me about?"
Wendy set down her silver spoon and finally looked up at Ann, getting straight to the point. "While that child may be York's, the Ferguson family does not recognize him."
Ann's heart sank.
Her grip on the water glass tightened. "Ma'am, York and I love each other very much, and now we have a child. Why can't you just let us be happy?"
Wendy rested her elbows on the table, her hands clasped lightly under her chin.
Her posture was perfect, her tone gentle. "Because you are not worthy."
Ann's face fell. "Why?"
"Asking that is like wondering why this restaurant in Capital City only has a German menu. No English at all."
Ann rose as well. "What is it, ma'am?"
"If my son and Claudia do not divorce, the Ferguson elders can turn a blind eye to your existence. But if their marriage ends because of you, I will be the first one to come after you."
With that, Wendy picked up her bag and left.
Ann remained standing by the table, taking a long moment to recover.
She chased after Wendy, catching her at the entrance. "Ma'am, we're both women. Why must you make things so difficult for me? Besides, York and I have a child together. If you did anything to us, he would never stand by and do nothing!"
The driver opened the car door. Wendy turned back to look at Ann. "If that day ever comes, I would be very interested to see what my own son would do to his mother for your sake."
