The moment the one and a half billion dollars hit her account, Claudia immediately treated Gideon to dinner to thank him.
At the restaurant, Gideon asked again, "Have you thought any more about the job offer?"
Claudia asked hesitantly, "Gideon, I heard the Harvest family's private hospitals are global. Would it be possible for me to work at the branch in Caledon? It's the birthplace of sound bowl therapy, and I'd like to study it further."
Gideon saw through her reasons but didn't comment. "I can make a single phone call and have it arranged for you anytime. It just depends on when you're ready to leave."
"In three days."
"I'll arrange it for you tonight when I get back," Gideon promised. "The hospital will cover all your travel expenses."
After parting ways with Gideon, Claudia went to the supermarket, bought a load of groceries, and cooked a feast for her family.
That evening, when her father came home from work and her brother was home for the weekend, Claudia enjoyed a happy dinner with them.
Seeing the graying hair at her parents' temples, Claudia felt a pang of guilt. But to buy back her jewelry someday, she knew she had to leave them and build a career for herself.
After dinner, the family gathered in the living room to chat.
Claudia took out two bank cards and handed one to her mother, Jessica. "Dad, Mom, the jewelry has been sold. I've split the one and a half billion between these two cards. I'm keeping one billion to pay back York and finalize the divorce. The rest is for you."
Claudia lowered her head, hesitating for a long moment before finding the courage to continue. "Dad, Mom, I'm planning to go abroad for a while to pursue further studies. I'll try to come back as soon as I can."
Claudia's parents exchanged a look, their hearts aching too much to speak.
Finally, Jessica found her voice. "Go. You're still young. Do whatever you want to do, and don't worry about us."
She said it with absolute certainty, but a part of her knew she was choosing to go so far away because of him. She didn't want to see him, nor did she want to hear anything about him, Ann, or her son.
The next day at noon, after settling things with her family, Claudia met with Wendy and Darleen.
She would be gone until the end of the year at least. Wendy had treated her like her own daughter since she was a child, and Darleen's kindness to her went without saying. Treating them to a meal was the least she could do.
Wendy held her knife and fork with elegance, but her eyes never left Claudia's face. "Claudia, tell me, has York been mistreating you again?"
Claudia looked down.
After a moment, she replied calmly, "Mom, York's on a business trip. He hasn't mistreated me."
Darleen had little appetite. She stared at the gift Claudia had brought her, a growing sense of unease in her heart. Leaning in, she whispered, "Claudia, are you planning to divorce my brother?"
