They stared at each other, one glaring, the other watching, the atmosphere at a standstill.
After a long while, York finally spoke. "Come home with me right now. I'll have your sister tell you herself whether I'm your brother-in-law or not."
"York Ferguson, I'm never speaking to you again!"
Eddy angrily kicked over a chair, pushed past York, and ran out of the office.
York rested a hand on the corner of the desk, his face grim with anger.
Mark cautiously entered the room. "Mr. Ferguson, we've managed to soothe the other parents. Right now, the homeroom teacher and the dean are in talks with Mr. Watkins. It might be best for you to head home for now. The school will keep you posted on any updates."
"Make sure the school understands," York instructed Mark. "Eddy is probably entering his rebellious phase. They need to be careful with how they talk to him, to persuade him gently."
Mark just nodded, not daring to say more.
This wasn't a rebellious phase; the kid clearly wanted to murder his boss.
Back in the car, York's phone rang again.
Seeing the caller ID, he wearily pinched the bridge of his nose before answering.
On the other end, Ann's voice was filled with unrestrained excitement. "York, where are you now? I made you dinner. You…"
Before Ann could finish, York cut her off. "Ann, don't go to the trouble. My wife is waiting for me at home. You two should get some rest."
With that, York hung up.
At the same time, in York and Claudia's marital home.
Ann stood before a mirror, phone in hand, admiring herself in a sexy nightgown.
She pulled her son, Ethan, in front of her. "Ethan, would you like York to be your daddy?"
Ethan clapped his hands happily. "Of course, Mommy!"
With a cunning glint in her eyes, Ann hugged her son. "Then when York gets home, I want you to try calling him 'Daddy.' If he says yes, then Ethan will have a daddy from now on."
Ethan happily ran downstairs, and Ann smiled with satisfaction.
Standing in the foyer, York looked around and couldn't help but frown: embossed cabinet doors, bronze handles, and the original glass-and-marble mirrored wall had been replaced with an arched, carved wooden doorway…
He remembered Claudia had always preferred a minimalist, light luxury style.
Why would she redecorate their home in this French country style that neither of them liked?
It seemed she was still angry with him.
She must have decorated the house like this on purpose, just to spite him.
York glanced downwards, the pair of identical men's slippers on the floor catching his eye. The heavy crease in his forehead gradually faded. Well, if that's the way it has to be. As long as she was ready to come back home, he'd be ready to let her call the shots.
York glanced at the gift in his hand, intended for Claudia, and slipped on the slippers.
Just then, Ann, clad in a sexy nightgown, appeared behind him with her son. "York, you're finally back."
At the sound of her voice, York spun around.
Ethan ran forward happily, hugged his leg, and called out, "Daddy~"
