Noelle was shocked to see Carl holding a bouquet of flowers. She remembered the nightmare of being on the operating table and how she had woken up in such a panic that she fell off it.
That experience scarred her. While she was lost in thought, Carl had already walked up to her. But she didn't reach out to take the flowers.
They felt like a cruel joke. After all, she never even got the chance to recover in her previous life.
Carl tested the waters. "What's wrong, Noelle?"
"Nothing. I just don't like these flowers." Noelle didn't take them and bluntly refused.
Carl smiled at the bouquet. "Sorry, I just picked something at random. I didn't know you didn't like them. I'll get a different kind next time."
"I probably won't be unlucky enough to get sick again next time," Noelle said sharply.
Carl wasn't fazed by the sting in her tone. He maintained his smile. "I'm sorry. That was poorly phrased. Where are you headed? I'll give you a ride."
"No need. My ride is here." Noelle gave him one last look before getting into the taxi. She still found Carl strange and didn't want to get too close.
Carl's expression turned indifferent after Noelle left. He swiftly dropped the flowers to the ground and crushed them beneath his foot.
Noelle headed straight back to school. After all, she still had classes today, and finals were approaching. She couldn't afford to miss anything.
But the moment she stepped onto campus, a crowd suddenly gathered around her. Some clapped, others held up banners.
"Congratulations to our firefighting hero, Noelle Liddell, on her discharge!"
"Noelle Liddell, rescuer of classmates from fire and danger!"
Noelle was surprised. "That fast?"
"Right? I didn't expect it either. Mr. Hitchcock was seriously planning to marry Laura. She was at the top, after all.
"But the engagement was suddenly called off. I knew there had to be a story, so I had someone dig around."
Grace had come back, too. "What was it? Hurry up and spill!"
"Apparently, Mr. Hitchcock caught Laura in a hotel with another man. He busted in with a group of men and caught them in the act. Then, he immediately went public and canceled the engagement."
Noelle's eyes widened. "Laura slept with someone else?"
Had she lost her mind?
